Cumbrian secondary school pupils looking for career options after they received their exam results had the opportunity to learn more about entering the logistics industry when a roadshow run by one of the UK’s leading training providers visited schools in the area.

System Training mobile classrooms visited Richard Rose Morton Academy and Richard Rose Central Academy in Carlisle on Thursday 20 and 27 of August offering youngsters the chance to gain an insight into working in one of the region’s most important industries - including roles such as large vehicle driving, warehouse management and logistics planning.

In conjunction with Cumbrian transport giant Stobart Group, System Training has set up a government-backed Apprenticeship in Logistics that includes practical work experience in various aspects of the industry, as well as providing classroom-based learning that leads to nationally-recognised qualifications and an opportunity to move into full-time employment upon completion of the course.   Another benefit of the scheme is that participants also receive a wage during their time on it to ensure they don’t have to incur the level of debt that affects many students.

The Apprenticeship is aimed at giving local youngsters the opportunity to gain a firm grounding in one of the UK’s biggest economic sectors, while raising the standard of talent available to local firms seeking new employees. The school roadshows had been timed to coincide with pupils receiving their GCSE and A-level results in order to make them aware of the opportunities available to them should they decide to move into further education or training.  The new Logistics Apprenticeship is now open to applicants.

System Training, which is based in Carlisle, has grown to become one of the UK’s most successful providers of workplace learning and has worked closely with Stobart Group and the government agency Skills for Logistics to build the Logistics Apprenticeship scheme. It is now hoping to engage other leading employers in Cumbria to develop similar schemes in order to improve the region’s long-term economic prospects.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the scheme should contact John Anderson at System Training on 01228 574000.

System Training CEO Robin Brown said:

“In the present economic climate young people who are leaving school are faced with an increasingly tough job market.  The fantastic young talent pool available in Cumbria deserves opportunities from local businesses to be able to show this talent.  It is in the interest of companies to attract dynamic young enthusiastic individuals who will add value and new ideas to the organisation.  The Logistics Apprenticeship has the personal support of Andrew Tinkler, CEO of Stobart Group, who understands the importance of offering young people a structured career path and an opportunity to succeed.”

Worth £75bn annually and employing approximately 2.3 million people, the logistics sector is undoubtedly a mainstay of the UK’s economy. However, with 63% of the 381,200 people employed in goods handling and storage occupations within the industry only having qualifications up to S/NVQ Level 2 (according to Skills for Logistics, the skills council for the freight logistics sector), it is clear that there is considerable scope for raising the bar in terms of the skill set of many of those employees and the industry as a whole.

The importance of such training, particularly in the warehouse environment, has never been more apparent.  With vast amounts of stock, complex checking systems, expensive vehicles and racking systems, along with a greater-than-ever emphasis on responsibility to the client, warehousing operations have to ensure that they are operating to the highest possible standard.

Suitable training in areas such as IOSH working safely, manual handling, forklift truck training and refreshers, and three day first aid courses can produce a number of benefits in the overall efficiency of a warehouse and help companies to stay competitive when drawing out of the recession.

Safety and accident rates can be lowered, motivation and staff morale improved and productivity increased due to faster and safer working practices.  Proactive investment in such training inevitably leads to less time spent of fixing problems - and more time spent doing the job well.

As one of the UK’s foremost logistics training providers, Carlisle-based System Training has led the way in terms of raising the quality and standard of occupational learning in the industry over the past decade.

System Training offers a diverse range of transport and logistics industry training options – making it a true ‘one stop shop’.  Its portfolio of high quality courses has been carefully and systematically developed through collaboration with employers to meet the precise needs of the transport industry.

Courses are regularly scheduled at the company’s training centres, and can also be delivered on-site anywhere in the country.  Highly experienced instructors and tutors holding appropriate qualifications are subject to regular audit to ensure continuous improvement and compliance and external quality control standards.  Course materials are regularly updated to ensure consistency with current legislation.

In order to support businesses through these legislational requirements and change System Training offers a range of funding options that, dependent on candidate eligibility, cover a vast suite of courses – allowing companies to up-skill members of staff in an extremely cost-effective manner.

This dynamic approach ensures System Training proactively manages the significant effects of changing health & safety legislative requirements which continually impact upon the transport and logistics sector.

A Carlisle-based training company has joined forces with the police in order to help officers understand some of the most complex accidents on public roads.  System Training, one of the UK’s leading logistics training providers, has teamed up with Cumbria Constabulary to deliver valuable training and a unique insight into the logistics industry to the county's Collision Investigation Unit.

The Collision Investigation Unit investigates and reconstructs fatal road collisions throughout Cumbria and provides evidence that can be used at Crown Court and Coroners’ Inquests.   System Training are committed to promoting safer driving in the haulage industry through their SAFED Driver Training course and, in line with this ethos, are collaborating with the Constabulary to produce a training package for officers working in the Unit.

Two Cumbria Constabulary Officers have already been trained to drive LGVs by System Training so that they can apply first-hand knowledge and experience of how the vehicles react in accident situations to their investigations.  System Training has formulated a training programme that will enable officers to gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in driving a variety of vehicles, and are hoping that more members of the unit will take advantage of the programme in the near future.

Detective Inspector Amanda Spedding of the Collision Investigation Unit said:

“We are pleased to be associated with System Training in this collaborative training venture.  They are recognised as being leaders in this specialist field and our officers will gain a great deal from their expertise.  Since working with System Training our officers have used the skills they have acquired for testing an articulated lorry for digital tachograph offences, driven articulated lorries to understand collision-related issues, and driven large buses for test purposes post-collision.  These new skills will be invaluable in helping them to solve some of the most complex road traffic accidents they encounter and ensure measures can be put in place to avoid them in the future.”

A Carlisle-based training company has smashed the national pass rate for training drivers of Large Goods Vehicles. System Training delivers Large Goods Vehicle training courses to some of the UK’s biggest firms involved in transport, including supermarket giants such as Tesco and ASDA.

The latest figures released by the Driving Schools Booking Service have shown that System Training not only had a significantly higher pass rate than the national average, but also surpassed the pass rate for the county of Cumbria. The nationwide pass rate for LGV licence test takers across 2008/09 is 48.39%, while the success rate for those in Cumbria is 51.36%. System Training’s records show that in August, 70% of candidates sitting tests after taking its LGV course attained the qualification.

The company, part of Logistics Academy North West, has attributed its success to its robust quality procedures, strong academic background and desire to deliver a higher standard of training than is required to simply pass the test. Among the firm’s blue-chip clients across the UK is the legendary Stobart logistics group.  The famous haulage company’s audio visual manager Ian Howe has praised the way System Training helped improve the service offered by Stobart. “When I started working for Eddie Stobart I was employed to manage the company’s giant mobile LED screen.  I always had to get an extra driver to bring the truck to events, even ones as close as Carlisle United FC, so it was a lot more hassle and a lot more cost,” he explained.

“The company decided to put me through my Class C HGV test, and I went to System Training for a week long course.  It was quite an intense week and much more thorough than I imagined it might be but I passed first time with flying colours.  We covered so much, especially how to make best use of the truck in terms of using the mirrors, gearbox and engine to drive safely and efficiently.   “Now the company is in a much better position to outsource the screen and the whole procedure is much more cost effective as it just takes one person to cover everything.  People will have seen it at CUFC matches, motor rallies, Carlisle Live and we have covered quite a few outdoor events and concerts this year.”

System Training are now looking to roll out a specially-discounted LGV licence course in order to help other companies create similar efficiencies in terms of staff availability and equipment running costs.

System Training CEO Robin Brown said:

“In 24 years of training drivers, the basic principles of quality tuition and first class service still deliver excellent results, as shown by our figures.  As an LGV licence is a significant investment for any company or individual, the cost of failure can be substantial, which means it is critical buyers obtain the best training available to ensure a first time pass.”

The Logistics Academy North West (LANW) is based at the University of Cumbria in Carlisle and offers employers in the logistics sector access to quality-assured training to improve the efficiency of their business.  It is one of nine Regional Logistics Academies being established in support of the Skills for Logistics strategy to reduce the skills gap in the logistics sector.  The academy is principally a single point of contact for advice and information to the logistics sector, particularly covering the area of training and development.
